Division/Department: Building Blocks Child Development Center

Location: Absentee Shawnee Tribe

Job Title: Master Teacher

Reports To: (Director)

Type of Position: Full Time (Hourly)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Master Teacher carries on his/her duties under the direction of and is responsible to the Director of the Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the care and safety of the children.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and a flexible, positive approach to his/her job.
  • Maintain prompt hours and notify the Director in the event of illness.
  • Maintain appropriate records and fully understand confidentiality.
  • Manage the classroom program.
  • Participate in achieving the objectives of the Center.
  • Understands and applies the philosophy of the Childcare Center.
  • Actively contribute to childcare functions geared towards the enrichment of child, parent, and staff interrelations and program planning and development.
  • Work together with other teachers as a team and provide guidance and support when an Assistant Teacher has been assigned to the classroom.
  • Help with the general care and cleanliness of equipment and materials of the Center.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING CHILDREN:

 
  The Master Teacher welcomes the children in the morning and makes them feel "at home" in the Center.

  • Most important responsibility is the care, safety, and well-being of all children in the center.
  • Prepares a stimulating program/lesson plan of activities for his/her group with attention to: individual development, emotional, physical, psychological and social needs of each child; and ensures respect for individual initiative, and the safety and health of the children. Submit lesson plans to director for approval.
  • Setting up the physical environment to meet the changing needs of the group of children for whom he/she is caring.
  • Promotes good nutritional habits and sees that there is a calm atmosphere for lunch, snacks and nap time.
  • Demonstrates verbally and by role modeling a sound knowledge of good teaching practice and knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Provide parents with a daily written report of childrens behavior and activities.
  • Provide parents with current child development information as requested/needed.
  • Has a responsibility to communicate with the Director any concerns arising from a child's difficulty in coping with the program and to work with the Director towards a solution.
  • In the event that a child seems unwell, it is the Master Teacher's responsibility to see that steps are taken to protect the health of the child and the other children in consultation with the Director.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING ADMINISTRATION:

  • When the Director is absent, the appointed Master Teacher will assume the responsibility of acting Director.
  • Attend staff meetings and required trainings as scheduled.
  • Assist in training of other staff members
  • Make recommendations regarding purchasing of equipment and materials, etc., in consultation with the Director.
  • Has a responsibility to communicate with the Director concerns regarding any problem that cannot be resolved and is leading to a confliction situation.
  • If child abuse is suspected, you are required by law to report the incident. You are required to cooperate fully in the investigation of any allegation.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, REQUIREMENTS, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age and have one of the following:
     -Obtained the qualifications at Level III or higher on the CECPD Professional Ladder
  • Prefer 2 years experience working with infants and young children in a center setting
  • Must have valid Oklahoma Driver's License
  • Must demonstrate basic knowledge of early childhood development
  • Must be able to stoop, crawl, kneel, and bend in order to speak to children at the child's eye level, to play with children, and to pick up toys/equipment off the floor.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and hold children:
        - Infant and Toddler Teachers: up to 36 pounds
        - Two-Year Old Teachers: up to 50 pounds
        - Preschool Teachers: up to 70 pounds
  • Must have skills to relate to the community in general.
  • Appropriate child development courses to meet state requirements.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check.
