Job Title: Certified Physician's Assistant
Reports To: Staff Physician (Shawnee Clinic Physician)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position is located at the Shawnee Clinic in Shawnee Oklahoma. The facility provides primary care in free-standing ambulatory setting to citizens of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Medicaid insured patients, and AST tribal employees. Clinical staff members provide primary therapeutic and preventative medical care for these beneficiaries. The incumbent receives functional supervision by the primary supervising physician designated by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an employed provider, the incumbent is assigned the following duties and responsibilities to be preformed in collaboration with and under the supervision of the primary or secondary supervisory physician:
- Performs physical examinations utilizing techniques of observation, analysis of patient history, inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation, etc. Employs diagnostic instruments as required.
- Performs and/or orders diagnostic investigations and studies including laboratory and imaging tests. Interprets and evaluates test results discriminating between normal and abnormal findings to identify the presence of disease and/or disability.
- Identifies, diagnoses, and manages specific illnesses and disease processes.
- Formulates, implements, and administers age-specific treatment plans in a manner which optimizes patient participation in the care plan. Performs minor in-patient procedures consistent with training, competency, and privileging. Oversees patient adherence to medical and nursing regimens for stable chronically ill patients and adjusts treatment plans and protocols to maximize the patient's quality of life and ability to perform activities of daily living.
- Arranges referrals to inpatient facilities, specialty care providers, community health nurses, and home health practitioners for patients requiring care or treatment beyond the scope of practice at the clinic.
- Establishes and maintains contact with patients' care givers and family members to provide education, training, and counseling on matters concerning treatment plans, diet, exercise, hygiene, safety, etc.
- Performs emergency services and life sustaining measures to stabilize patients in need of emergency care prior to transporting to a local emergency department.
- Participates in the clinic's 24-hour on-call provider program.
- Conducts and documents in-service training on topics of interest for other members of the clinical and administrative support staffs as needed. Trains other clinicians on the use of medical devices and equipment employed at the clinic.
- Serves as medical advisor to the infection control nurse and substitutes as medical advisor to the Safety and Security Committee and the QIRP Committee in the absence of the Medical Director/Physician.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant curriculum and be licensed as a physician assistant in the state of Oklahoma by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision pursuant to the recommendation of the Physician's Assistant Advisory Board.
- Complete the requirements for and maintain certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants, Inc.
- Be certified/licensed by the US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control to prescribe and administer Schedule 3N, 4, and 5 narcotics
- Be insurable by Physicians' Liability Insurance Company of Oklahoma for professional liability coverage in amounts deemed prudent and by the tribe
- Obtain and maintain certification as an advanced cardiac life support provider
- Attend continuing medical education courses deemed appropriate for physician's assistants by the NCCPA, Inc. and/or other widely-recognized professional organizations
- Be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing, subject to frequent interruptions, long, irregular hours, subject to pressures associated with dealing with the seriously ill and their family members, and constant exposure to infectious illness and disease.
