General Description

This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Resource Center in Little Axe, Oklahoma within the AST Diabetes & Wellness Education Program, whose offices are located at the Little Axe Health Facility in Little Axe, Oklahoma. The position is under the direct supervision of the Diabetes and Wellness Fitness Manager.  The purpose of the position is to assess fitness member readiness for physical activity and to supervise that activity at the Resource Center. The Fitness Technician serves to assist in maintaining regular gym hours, cleaning of the gym and equipment, and the implementation of grant requirements that encourage, support and educate Native American people on lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life related to diabetes, the prevention of diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and exercise with participants. Must have a valid Oklahoma drives license and overnight travel may be required.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assist in performing evaluation and assessment of client readiness for physical activity and orients them to the facility and to the equipment
  • Assists in the completion of exercise tests and the development of prescriptions for appropriate exercise for each new member.
  • Performs appropriate screening test for individuals with a pre-existing medical condition before exercise
  • Opens and closes the fitness facility according to the pre-approved hours of operation scheduled
  • Routinely inspects all fitness equipment, performs preventative maintenance and makes minor equipment repairs according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Assists in development of fitness facility policies and procedures and assists in the maintenance of a facility manual containing all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Enforces fitness facility policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Assists with answering phone calls
  • Assists the Diabetes and Wellness Program with advertisement of the facility utilizing brochures, flyers, articles, calendars, etc.
  • Assists the Fitness Manager with research and writing of articles/flyers/material for outreach, newsletters, etc.
  • Assists with the collection of information and statistical data for reporting and assists with monthly facility reporting to the Fitness Manager.
  • Helps to create culturally appropriate activity programs and special events for clients according to age and physical capabilities.
  • Helps other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Native American Preference/EEO/Drug Free /Smoke Free Workplace
  • At least one year of experience in a fitness/wellness facility is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to interact and communicate with varied educational levels.
  • Must have computer skills necessary to research and develop educational material.
  • Must be able to effectively relate within the local community. 
  • Must be able to respond effectively to oral and written directives. 
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
