General Description

This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribe Little Axe Health Center in Norman, OK. This department provides general optometry and vision care for the members of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, their immediate dependent family members, members of other federally-recognized AI and AN residing in the tribe’s health program catchment area and Medicaid eligible beneficiaries. The optometric tech performs various services within a scope of care, quality, and quantity under the direction of an Optometrist, which are consistent with established professional standards of care and tribal policies and procedures.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provides direct optometric services to those eligible for care using techniques of observation, examination, patient history, etc.
  • Performs various services including pre eye exams, visual field testing, other testing including retinal photography, glaucoma screening.
  • Perform frame measurements and adjustments.
  • Verify spectacle prescriptions through use of a lens measuring instrument.
  • Prepares prescriptions and orders all glasses from optical vendor.
  • Assists Optometrist in chair side activities during various eye and vision exams.
  • Provides assistance for patients with contact lens selection, frame selection, dispensing of frames/lens, and patient education under the supervision of the Optometrist.
  • Assist Optometrist in the patient referral process, including maintaining records and systems to ensure appropriate follow up for patient services is completed.
  • Complete required patient records, electronic information, data input in a timely manner.
  • Electronic Health Record proficiency an important requirement including maintaining currency in all new updates and system requirements of MedFlow and AllScripts interface.
  • Provides support and coordination in the ordering, inventory and management of program supplies.
  • Assist with routine cleaning needs to provide a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Participate in department and clinic staff meetings as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with clinic staff and patients to ensure services are provided in a quality manner.
  • Understand the scope of general eye care services as rendered within the Eye Care Program.
  • Take direction and work in a supporting role with the Optometrist.
  • Be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing; frequent interruptions; long, irregular hours; and the pressures and demand of dealing with ill and injured and their family members.
Qualifications:
  • Be a High School graduate with work experience in the field of Optometry.
  • Previous training and experience as an Optometric Tech is a preference.
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and Background check is required.
