Election Commission

Mission Statement

The Election Commission's mission is to ensure that the democratic process is protected, secure, and strong.  We strive to ensure that the voices of the Absentee Shawnee members are not only heard but also valued by their elected representatives.

Honor the Past. Protect the Future

Generations of Native leaders have worked to protect the right of tribes to govern themselves. By participating in tribal elections, citizens honor those efforts while helping guide the Nation for future generations.

The Importance of Voting

Tribal elections (yearly, General Council, committees) determine leadership responsible for guiding the future of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. These leaders make important decisions affecting education, healthcare, economic development, and community well-being.

Voting protects sovereignty. Tribal sovereignty is the inherent right of Native Nations to govern themselves. When tribal citizens participate in elections, they strengthen self-governance and ensure leadership reflects the voice of the community.

Voting helps:

  • Maintain independence

  • Protect tribal rights
